Thoughts and Musings from Jay Henry

THE REAL ME

HI.

My name is John Sellers, Sr.

I am a retired window clerk from the U.S.P.S., the husband of Sue and the father of John, Jr. and Rodger.

If you’re not the lead dog in the pack, the scenery never changes.

This is my first venture into the realm of cyberspace so please excuse the blunders that are more or less a standard feature with my style of writing.

In the early 1960’s, I began to chronicle memories from my life. Growing up on a small farm in rural South Carolina in the late 30’s to early 50’s was sometimes touch and go. The country was struggling to recover from ”the great depression” and reminiscing about those struggles has provided me with much of the ammunition for my written material. Seventy-five years of living in an imperfect world have furnished the rest.

My chronicles began with a pencil and whatever paper was available. A portable typewriter was later added but only when my family presented me with a computer did my writing become quite serious.

Somewhere along the way I began to assign humorous events to a fictitious couple, and JAY HENRY and SUSIE MAE were born. The antics of this backwoods couple are figments of my imagination and yet have become very real to me. Their reactions to many everyday occurrences have been transformed to have happened, “ jus ‘ cross th ‘ creek, at th ‘ shack, or in th ‘ store, etc.” If the reader thinks that no one can be this dumb, then my goal has been obtained.

My credentials include a five-year stint as a columnist for a local newspaper, articles published in numerous newspapers and magazines. Four (yet to be published) books clutter the bookcase in my office along with CD’s containing thousands of short stories.

I offer my thanks to my family for their help and encouragement and especially to my lovely wife of fifty-three years for her willing acceptance of disparagement as the role model for the infamous Susie Mae.

If anyone receives enjoyment from my efforts to discipline this box of wires, bolts, dot-coms and icons, my labors, enhanced by a quart of coffee at 04:00 a.m., will not have been in vain.
